While Foden was stunned by the goal, Newcastle's Dan Burn was fuming. The defender approached the celebrating City players as the Magpies claimed that Anthony Gordon was fouled by Ruben Dias in the build up and that the goal should not have stood. Newcastle were not behind for long, though, as Alexander Isak pulled them level after 35 minutes. Two minutes later, the home team were ahead thanks to a goal from Gordon – assisted by Burn.

After Saturday's game, City will begin preparing for their FA Cup match against Tottenham on January 26. Newcastle, meanwhile, will take on Fulham in the fourth round of the competition the following day.
