Cesc Fabregas appears to be giving out mixed signals over his future, prompting even more speculation that he has played his last game for Arsenal.
The 23-year-old Spaniard has made no secret of his desire to return to his boyhood club Barcelona, from who Arsenal signed him from in 2003. He has appeared to give the clearest indication so far that he will leave the Gunners at some point in the future
Fabregas has said: “If I leave Arsenal it will be to play at Barcelona, I do not know when it will happen, I am very happy at Arsenal and I am in no hurry to leave.” He added: “Before the World Cup I want to know my future, because playing at a World Cup and having something on your mind does not help anyone.”
His excuse of not wanting to go to the World Cup with a undecided future is a weak point to make. Every World Cup many players go knowing that if they perform well they can seek a transfer away from their club. Also Fabregas’s contract doesn’t run out until 2014 so just what clarification he needs is a mystery. He knows he is a great player and that if it was up to Wenger then there is no way that he would sell him so what about his future does he need resolved?
With Arsene Wenger promising that he will spend money this summer, perhaps he will be looking to increase his war-chest by selling his influential captain, albeit against Wenger’s wishes. Although he is a terrific talent he would fetch a very high price in the transfer market which would allow Wenger to buy a number of top class players and then Arsenal would have a real chance of competing for the highest honours again.
Although Fabregas could be deemed as ‘irreplaceable’ there have been some suggestions that Samir Nasri, Aaron Ramsey or Jack Wilshere could occupy his role. They are similar players and it could potentially work out. If Fabregas wants to leave then as we’ve seen in the modern game Wenger will be powerless to stop him. It’s a shame because he is currently Arsenal’s best player but if his heart isn’t committed to the club, which appears to be the case then they should start planning for life without him now.
Farbregas is one of the best players in the world and would benefit any team that has him in their side immensely. But should he leave North London this summer then Arsenal will still cope fine without him, they proved this when they sold Thierry Henry to Barcelona. There was an Arsenal before Fabregas and there will be an Arsenal after, no player is bigger than the club and whether it is Nasri or someone else they will find someone to fill the void that he leaves.
