Chelsea hope to strengthen their defence this summer with the potential signing of Ajax defender Davinson Sanchez, according to Sport.
What’s the story?
After this weekend’s FA Cup final, Chelsea manager Antonio Conte will put all his focus into this summer’s transfer activity.
It is believed that the Italian is keen to bring in more defenders to help cope with the demands of next season’s Champions League commitments.
The Blues won the Premier League title with two games left to play during a season that did not include any European football for the club.
Cesar Azpilicueta, Gary Cahill and David Luiz thrived in Conte’s 3-4-3 system, and now 20-year-old Sanchez could join them.
According to Sport, Chelsea are considering battling Barcelona for the youngster’s signature after giving up on Paris Saint-Germain’s Marquinhos, whom they believe will join Manchester United this summer.
Why is Sanchez in demand?
The Colombian has been a key figure in Ajax’s defence this season, and he will hope to add a Europa League winners’ medal to his cabinet when the Dutch club face United in Stockholm on Wednesday night.
Sanchez has made 45 appearances in all competitions for the club, and despite his young age he has shown strength and a commanding presence at the back.
The defender has already been capped at international level, but making the move to a top Premier League club would be a big ask.
If he were to join Chelsea, though, he is likely to be gradually brought into the squad, giving him an opportunity to develop and fight for a place.
The difficulty with any potential suitors for Sanchez is that he has only been at Ajax for a season following his switch from Atletico Nacional and is under contract until 2021, which means that the Dutch club could demand a large figure.
