The England international was Liverpool's captain prior to his controversial move to Saudi Arabia, and was also made Ettifaq captain by manager Steven Gerrard. Now, in his second appearance for the Dutch club, he is set to wear the armband against Heerenveen on Sunday.

Steven Bergwijn, the former Tottenham winger, is currently Ajax's captain but he is injured, and will miss Sunday's encounter. As a result, Henderson will take the armband, but the reports that the appointment could be made permanent by coach John van 't Schip.

Ajax are currently fifth in the Eredivisie, although they are 21 points behind leaders PSV Eindhoven. A fourth-placed finish would seal qualification to the Europa League qualifiers, while third-place earns a spot in the Champions League qualifiers.
