Mikel Merino's 120th-minute header ended the story of hosts Germany at Euro 2024 as Spain won a chaotic affair against Die Mannschaft. The extremely physical affair saw a total of 39 fouls in 120 minutes of play with 16 yellow cards distributed equally between both sides. With a new rule stating that any player who picks up two yellow cards across the tournament, before the semi-finals, will be suspended, Luis de la Fuente now has a headache with two players unavailable for selection.

The two players are Daniel Carvajal and Robin Le Normand. Carvajal received a red card for a second yellow in the dying embers of extra-time. Le Normand received his second caution of the tournament and is therefore unavailable for the crucial semi-final against either France or Portugal.

There were initial fears that Morata could miss out on the semi-final clash as TV broadcasts had reported that referee Anthony Taylor had shown him a yellow card during the wild celebrations that followed Merino's winner on the night.
However, UEFA confirmed after the game that the Atletico Madrid forward hadn't been booked and thus he will be available to feature in the semi-final. For more information, check out GOAL's full yellow card and suspension breakdown ahead of the remaining quarter-finals and semi-final ties.
WHAT NEXT FOR SPAIN?
De la Fuente will be without the services of Pedri who picked up an early injury following a reckless foul by Toni Kroos in the sixth minute of play. They will take on France on Tuesday, July 9.
